FINAL FANTASY II tells the epic tale of Firion and his allies as they become entangled in the conflict between the rebel army and the power-hungry forces of the Palamecian Empire. The game received acclaim for introducing innovative features such as the word memory system that retains keywords for future conversations, and the mastery system that replaces the familiar concept of gaining levels by earning experience points.
Chosen by the crystal to become Warriors of Light, four young heroes are plunged into a battle between light and darkness. FINAL FANTASY III introduced the job system that allows characters to switch jobs at will, as well as the ability to summon creatures, a feature that became one of the defining elements of the series.
The first in the series released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, FINAL FANTASY IV boasted enhanced graphics and a beautifully arranged soundtrack. It follows Cecil, a young man conflicted about his purpose as a Dark Knight, and his allies who accompany him on his journey of self-discovery. The game was the first to feature the Active Time Battle system, presenting more dynamic time-based combat.
The fifth instalment of the series depicts the battle between Exdeath, a dark warlock who seeks the power of the Void, and young Bartz and his friends. The existing job system was further refined, allowing for a new style of character ability customisation.
The story of FINAL FANTASY VI revolves around fourteen characters, including Terra, a young woman with the gift of magic, and Locke, a treasure hunter. The game allowed players more freedom in selecting their party members, a feature carried on in subsequent titles. The incredible depth of the 2D visuals and the extraordinary production of the opera scene garnered much-deserved attention.
The renowned FINAL FANTASY VII revolutionised the gaming industry with its 3D polygons and beautiful CG cutscenes. The tale of Cloud and his friends unfolds as they chase after the war hero Sephiroth, once thought to be dead, but their pursuit soon transforms into a battle to save the planet. FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE was released in 2020 and is still generating a buzz today.
Through his fateful encounter with a young woman named Rinoa, the mercenary Squall becomes caught up in a battle against a powerful sorceress. Not only is FINAL FANTASY VIII the first in the series with a theme song, it tells a dramatic coming-of-age story as the characters struggle with school, relationships and life.
True to its theme of returning to its roots, the crystals and medieval fantasy world of FINAL FANTASY IX are reminiscent of the series’ earlier titles. Through the hardships and struggles that Zidane and his allies face in their journey, they discover the meaning of life and how precious a gift it truly is. The game introduced Active Time Events, which provide a closer look into the characters’ thoughts, actions, and emotions.
The summoner Yuna and her guardian Tidus set out on a journey to save the world from Sin, a giant monster threatening their home. FINAL FANTASY X offered an immersive story-telling experience with improved animations complete with facial expressions, and voice acting, a first for the series.
Players from all over the world embarked upon a journey together through the world of Vana’diel in the series’ first Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Though online, the story features numerous familiar FINAL FANTASY elements. Many continue to enjoy their adventures today as FINAL FANTASY XI celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
After meeting Ashe, the princess of a fallen kingdom, a youth named Vaan finds himself caught up in the political strife between empires.
